Health

Liposuction is one of the most common plastic surgeries in the aesthetic world, but it is necessary to be well informed before carrying out the procedure.

Liposuction is a resource used by many women and men to provide quick and effective weight loss. Among plastic surgeries, it is one of the most sought after, especially in Brazil. Basically, it removes excess localized fat from a certain area of the body, such as the belly, thighs, back or arms. Also, it helps to improve the body contour.

Despite being a quick and technically simple surgery, many things must be considered before opting for the procedure. It is necessary to look for a trustworthy clinic and surgeon. It is also essential to carry out several tests to ensure that the body is healthy and strong enough to receive anesthesia, which in this case is general.

So, if you’re interested in finding out more information about liposuction, we’ve put together everything you need to know about the popular procedure.

How is liposuction done?

After carrying out the battery of exams and confirming that the person is ready for surgery, the plastic surgeon recommends the administration of anesthesia. General or intravenous sedation is usually applied. This way, as the anesthesia takes effect, the delimitation of the area where the fat will be removed begins.

Then, some holes are made in different regions. Where a sterile liquid is introduced, which has the function of reducing bleeding. Therefore, the body is already prepared for the tube designed to release excess fat in the region to be inserted. Once the fat “separates from the meat”, it is aspirated through a medical device attached to the thin tube.

As for the duration of the surgery, it all depends on the area and amount of fat to be removed. According to doctors, it can vary from a few minutes to a few hours.

In addition to removing fat, during liposuction the doctor can also perform liposculpture. In this case, it consists of using the removed fat and placing it elsewhere on the body. Which aims to improve the contour of the body. In other words, with just one surgery, it is possible to remove localized fat from the belly, for example, and then place it on the butt to increase volume.

Risks of liposuction

It is necessary to carry out a very broad selection and field research in order to avoid risks and greater complications. In fact, the biggest risks involve defects in the body contour, infections, emboli, bruises or permanent changes in skin color.

However, the most common risk is bruising. Either way, it depends on the location and size of the treated area, the duration of the procedure and individual factors. Edema is also a common ailment, and usually persists for several weeks. In some areas, such as the ankles and calves, it may persist for six months or a year.

Hyperesthesia is common after the procedure. But they gradually improved within three to six months after surgery. Hyperpigmentation, on the other hand, can be said to be a rarer condition. However, if it appears, it will decrease over time. In more severe cases, it responds well to treatment with topical agents.

According to doctors, undergoing excessively aggressive liposuction can lead to seromas. Seroma is basically the accumulation of fluid under the skin. In this case, it will be necessary to drain it to remove the excess.

Infection, according to data, is extremely uncommon, accounting for less than 1% of cases. Unfortunately, it can be caused by a combination of sterile technique, small incisions, and the antibacterial effects of lidocaine.

The post-operative period of liposuction

But not even for those who want an immediate result, lipo is the solution. This is because no aesthetic surgical procedure, including liposuction, shows immediate results.

After lipo, the operated area takes some time to deswell. To see the result, we need to wait for the region to recover. Therefore, after the second or third month after surgery, it is possible to notice a slight decrease in edema and, consequently, have an idea of the result. However, the true result can only be seen after six months.

The post-operative period is exactly the same as any other surgical procedure. The small incisions – approximately one centimeter – that are made to insert the cannula – heal easily. Experts recommend that the patient undergo complementary physiotherapeutic treatments post-operatively.

Lymphatic drainage, for example, is perfect for minimizing the effects of edema and helping with the healing of the operated area. Furthermore, it is extremely necessary to use modeling belts for at least a month, to help firm the skin.

Finally, another little-known fact is that you can only take a shower three days after surgery. And the stitches are only removed after eight days.

Procedure results

The objective of liposuction is to make the body more contoured, therefore, it is not focused on losing weight. In this case, this is just a consequence. Therefore, it leaves a more beautiful and slim body. However, as mentioned previously, it is only after a few months that the results can be better observed, as the person is no longer swollen.

The best thing about this cosmetic surgery is that it practically leaves no scars. As the holes are really small and made in places where it is difficult to see them (such as in the folds or inside the navel), it is an excellent solution for those who want to lose localized fat without much effort.
