Controversy over Carnival parades grows after school decision

Carnival has become one of the biggest controversies of recent times in large cities. After all, deciding whether or not the celebration will take place has been a huge impasse for public officials for a few months now. Be that as it may, the discussion gained another episode last Wednesday (12). After all, the controversy over Carnival parades remains firm and strong, raising opinions from all sides. On Wednesday, a group of associations that were to parade at the Anhembi Sambódromo, in São Paulo, canceled their technical rehearsals for the weekend.

First of all, it was believed that, at first, schools such as Nenê de Vila Matilde, Camisa Verde e Branco, Império de Casa Verde, Rosas de Ouro and Gaviões da Fiel would be using the space. It would be used for technical rehearsals over the next weekend (15th and 16th). However, with the increase in cases of COVID-19 and also the advancement of the flu epidemic in the capital, these associations decided to cancel what had already been agreed.

Furthermore, the League of Samba Schools has also made some important decisions to hold the parade, something that was passed on to the city of São Paulo. However, Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) has not yet defined which plan they should follow or whether there will even be a parade at the Anhembi Sambadrome. After all, the decision influences the health of people who enter the avenue to watch the celebration. Likewise, the capital’s tourist sector earns money from ticket sales and the sale of boxes, and ends up just as damaged.

Controversy over Carnival parades continues in full swing

In addition to the controversy over Carnival parades, there was also the issue of street Carnival. On January 6th, for example, the city of São Paulo canceled the street celebration, similar to what Rio de Janeiro did as well. However, they kept the parades going. In this sense, the justification is a possible sanitary control of the event, as it takes place in a specific place.
