Think of an easy and delicious pie! It’s with French (salt) bread, people! You can make it with older bread or day-old bread. The recipe here is for a small refractory (17.5cm x 30cm), which serves 4 people.
Ingredients:
- 2 savory breads (French, salt bread, etc.) cut into not too thin slices;
- 1 slice of smoked pepperoni, chopped into small cubes;
- 1/2 small onion chopped into cubes;
- 1/2 can of chopped peeled tomatoes (or 1 cup of tomato sauce to which you can add 1 diced tomato);
- 1 teaspoon of oregano;
- 100g of mozzarella cheese (it’s actually “ç”, before you play Prof. Pasquale, go do some research!);
- 1 ovo;
- 4 tablespoons of milk;
- Salt, black pepper and olive oil to taste.
Mix the pepperoni (raw) with the onion. Season with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper and oregano. Reserve.
Grease a baking dish with olive oil and line it with the slices of bread. Spread the chopped peeled tomato (or sauce) over the top, then add the pepperoni and onion mixture that was reserved.
Beat the egg as if you were making an omelet. Add the milk, a pinch of salt and mix well. Spread this mixture over everything. It will go down and penetrate the bread. Cover with the cheese slices, put a little oregano on top and place in the preheated oven at 200º for about 15 to 20 minutes. Keep an eye on it, if it starts to brown, turn it off.
The liquid makes the bread swell and turn into a uniform, fluffy and moist mass, it doesn’t even look like bread. Delight people!
