Firstly, the vaccine is produced from a bacteria called Mycobacterium bovis found in cattle. After the vaccine is administered, a small lesion appears that gives rise to a papule, a solid elevation of the skin.
After about a month, the papule regresses and becomes an ulcer, which in turn causes a scar. If the lesion becomes very large and contains a large amount of pus, it is necessary to see a doctor.

Initially, BCG is part of the Basic Vaccination Calendar. It is mandatory for children under one year of age, who should preferably be vaccinated before leaving the maternity ward.
Furthermore, for newborns to receive the vaccine, they must weigh 2kg or more and be in perfect health. Children who were not vaccinated early in life should receive the vaccine during school age.

The vaccine provides more than 80% protection against severe and disseminated forms of the disease, such as tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis.
BCG, however, is not recommended in cases of immunodeficiency, weight less than 2 kg, malnutrition, fever, treatment with corticosteroids or chronic diseases. After vaccination, there are few reports of adverse effects.
