Ankle tendonitis: symptoms, causes and treatment

Illnesses

Ankle tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendons that connect the bones and muscles of the ankles, causing symptoms such as pain when walking, stiffness when moving the joint or swelling in the ankle, for example.

Generally, ankle tendonitis is more common in athletes who do constant physical activity, such as running or jumping, due to the progressive wear of the tendons. Tendinitis in the ankles can be cured, and treatment should be done with a combination of rest, application of ice, use of anti-inflammatory medications and physiotherapy.

Symptoms of tendonitis in the ankles

The main symptoms of ankle tendonitis include pain in the joint, swelling of the ankle and difficulty moving the foot and walking.

Normally, the diagnosis of tendonitis is made by the orthopedist only based on the symptoms reported by the patient, but in some cases it may be necessary to take an X-ray to identify the cause of the pain in the foot, for example.

Main causes

Ankle tendonitis occurs more frequently in people who practice intense physical activity and who frequently activate the ankle, such as running, performing exercises in which it is necessary to jump or squat frequently, as these cause progressive wear. of the tendons present in the ankle.

Furthermore, this type of tendonitis can appear in people who have changes to the foot or who wear unsuitable shoes.

What is the treatment like?

Treatment for tendonitis in the ankles must be guided by an orthopedist but is normally done with:

  • Ice application 10 to 15 minutes on the affected area, repeating 2 to 3 times a day;
  • Use of anti-inflammatory medicationssuch as Ibuprofen or Naproxen, every 8 hours to relieve pain caused by tendonitis;
  • Physiotherapy Exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles and tendons in the affected area, reducing inflammation and accelerating recovery;

In more serious cases, where ankle tendonitis does not improve after a few weeks of treatment, your doctor may recommend surgery to repair the tendons and improve symptoms. See a great way to speed up tendonitis treatment in: Ankle proprioception exercises.
