In a city full of options, it’s not easy to discover a real Japanese restaurant in NY.
It’s great when we’re traveling and we find a restaurant, isn’t it? That’s exactly what happened to me last time in New York, when I chose Sakagura. I decided on the restaurant because I love Japanese cuisine and made sure it stayed open late, as it would be a post-theatre dinner.
Arrival was already a thrill! Sakagura is located in the basement of a commercial building in Midtown East, so you won’t see the entrance right away. As there is another Asian restaurant on the street, we even got confused and checked the number.
You go down the stairs, a little afraid of what you’ll find, but when you get there, you come across a traditional Japanese restaurant and you can already get an idea of what’s to come.
Delicious sushi, made by native Japanese! No cream cheese, mayonnaise or Ceará sushi men. There, everything is authentic. The presentation of the dishes is a chapter in itself, everything is well thought out, as is the decoration of the restaurant, making us feel like we are in Tokyo. And the sake list is very generous! According to the NY Times, SAKAGURA is synonymous with serious sake drinking in New York (Sakagura is synonymous with drinking real sake in NY).
Sakagura is more than approved. And the best part: the kitchen is open until 12:45! A rarity for NY and ideal for those who want to stop by Broadway first.
