During the last edition of ‘Fantástico’, broadcaster Globo made a point of denouncing violence against journalists by Bolsonaro.
Last Sunday night (12), the screening of “Fantástico” was marked by an important complaint. A long report in the newspaper was responsible for denouncing the violence of President Bolsonaro and his security team. In this sense, Globo denounces violence against journalists, those who follow the President of the Republic’s agenda. After arriving in the south of Bahia, following the disasters caused by the rains, security guards removed some journalists from TV Bahia (Globo) and TV Aratu (SBT) teams with force and brutality.
When Globo reported violence against journalists, Maju Coutinho and Poliana Abritta were responsible for reading a text about the case. In this way, they gave more details about the security guards’ attacks, as well as the fact that they broke the press teams’ work instruments. On the other hand, the objective of the teams covering the situation was simply to follow Bolsonaro on a trip. And this served nothing more than to demonstrate how he had shown solidarity with the victims of the tragedy.
In any case, the case is not the first related to violence against journalists who cover the President of the Republic’s daily life. On other occasions, more professionals have been victims of aggression. Not only by security guards, but also by Bolsonaro supporters.
Globo denounces violence by Bolsonaro’s security guards against journalists
Presenter Maju Coutinho was responsible for starting to read the text in which Globo denounces violence, narrating situations of attacks suffered by journalists other times than the last. Furthermore, such situations are already known to the Federal Supreme Court, but no decision has yet been taken by the body. Likewise, the text harshly criticizes the STJ for not having yet expressed support for the free press.
“The Federal Supreme Court was called in November by Rede Sustentabilidade to prohibit President Jair Bolsonaro from attacking or encouraging verbal or physical attacks on the press and professionals in the field”, began the anchor. “The party asks the STF to order the Presidency of the Republic to draw up and present a security plan to guarantee the integrity of the professionals who monitor the president’s routine.”
Soon after, Maju commented on how the action in November occurred after attacks by Bolsonaro’s team against journalists during his visit to Italy. In this way, there has already been a manifestation of the lack of respect and lack of professional ethics on the part of the president’s group. “The action was filed after Bolsonaro treated Brazilian journalists with hostility during his trip to Rome, Italy. Security guards who were close to the president attacked anyone who tried to ask questions”, explained the anchor.
Maju Coutinho and Poliana Abritta comment on other cases of attacks against journalists
Likewise, Poliana Abritta continued the text by talking about how even the Attorney General’s Office of the Union came to speak out. They called for rejection of the actions against Bolsonaro. However, Poliana still brought the government’s view regarding acts of exacerbated violence against the press, but in general.
“The Federal Attorney General’s Office has already commented on the process and defended the rejection of the action for procedural reasons. The government states that it is not possible to attribute episodes of hostility or intimidation against the press to authorities. The government also says that Bolsonaro’s critical stance towards the press does not exceed the limits of freedom of expression. The STF is still awaiting an opinion from the Attorney General’s Office. The trial of the action does not yet have a date”, read Maju’s colleague.
Finally, Maju made a final demand to the STF. “This Sunday’s attacks show that it is past time for the Attorney General’s Office to give its opinion on the action being taken before the Supreme Court, with Minister Dias Toffoli as rapporteur. The press fulfills a right written in the Constitution, and must have its safety guaranteed”.
The broadcaster also made a point of making its position clear, through Poliana: “Globo repudiates the attacks on reporters Camila Marinho and Cleriston Santana, from TV Bahia, and reporters Xico Lopes and Dario Cerqueira, from TV Aratu, and expresses solidarity with them”.
