Fruit ice creams are a good option for an afternoon snack

News

In recent years, most Brazilians have, almost as a life motto, sought out healthy food options.

The consumption of fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains and olive oil, which make up the Mediterranean diet, increases life expectancy.

Researchers at Harvard University show that individuals who follow this type of diet have lower rates of cellular degeneration, a process intrinsic to aging, and can have more years of life, thanks to healthy food choices.

With this in mind, the Monterrey franchise network offers options for all tastes in its product portfolio, including fruit-based ice creams that can be consumed guilt-free.

To prepare the comparison, a mango-flavored ice cream and an oat, banana and honey cereal bar, found in conventional retailers, were used.

A 22g cereal bar has 79 kcal, while a 120g mango ice cream has only 53 kcal and no chemical additives.

We noticed that the amount of carbohydrates, total fat and saturated fat are also lower in the iced product.

In the comparative table, we have: 17g of carbohydrates; 0.5g of total fat and 0.3g of saturated fat in the bar; while ice cream has 12g of carbohydrates; 0.2g of total fat and 0.1g of saturated fat.

The big difference noticed is in the amount of sodium, one of the main villains if consumed in large quantities. Excess can cause an increase in blood pressure, fluid retention and weight gain.

While the ice cream has 0mg, the cereal bar portion has 41mg. The recommendation is that salt consumption does not exceed 5g per day, equivalent to approximately 2,000mg of sodium. A portion of this food, for example, is equivalent to 2.05% of the recommended daily sodium intake. Furthermore, the product contains brown sugar in its composition, while the cold option only contains mango and water.

“We use selected fruits in the manufacture of products, always concerned with providing consumers with quality options. For those looking to diversify their diet during their afternoon snack, without forgetting their health concerns, fruit-based ice creams, such as mango, strawberry or passion fruit, can be a great alternative. Because they have low caloric value and reduced levels of fat and sodium, they are more attractive than a cereal bar, for example”, says Monterrey nutritionist, Neyla Alves.

Both products have the same amount of protein (1.0g), a nutrient that satisfies hunger between meals. The ice cream does not contain gluten and can be consumed by people with celiac disease. In addition, it also contains 2g of dietary fiber. It is worth remembering that it is recommended to ingest 25g of this component per day, which helps the intestine to function properly.
