Cumbuco is a fishing village located in the municipality of Caucaia, on the west coast of Ceará, about 23 km from the capital.
Cumbuco’s excellent winds make it one of the best destinations in the country for kitesurfing, which is why the city is full of kitesurfers and also windsurfers and surfers, mainly from August to November, along with the holidays from December to January, a time when trade winds blow.
Surrounded by dunes and deserted landscapes, the village also welcomes lazier tourists who just want to take a good swim in the warm sea, stretch out on the mats, feel the breeze and enjoy the landscape. The only beach with infrastructure and closest to the center is the beach that gives the village its name, however, Barra do Cauípe and Tabuba beaches stand out for their calm and incredible views.
The most popular activities for those who set foot there are buggy rides that take them to the beaches, Lagoa do Banana, Lagoa do Cauípe and Parnamirim for bathing and colorful raft rides. It is also possible to go banana boating and try out the fun skibunda, sliding down the dunes and ending up directly in the calm waters. It’s quite a trip for the family or as a couple. The village’s rustic center is a great option to go at night to enjoy the moonlight and go to the bars and restaurants in the region with delicious food, from regional based on fish and crabs to international. Some craft shops and kiteshops are also located there. To have a peaceful night’s sleep, just go to one of the many accommodation options that Cumbuco and Caucaia (neighboring city) have, such as rustic inns, hotels with a thousand and one facilities and resorts with countless attractions.
Weekends are usually full in the village with residents of Fortaleza, neighboring municipalities and tourists taking exciting buggy rides, rafts, kayaks and jet-skis across the lagoons and dunes. The region’s beaches are the best for kitesurfing and for swimmers to dive into the warm waters. The surrounding Banana Lagoon is one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset.
Tours
Traveling to Cumbuco and just lazing around on the beaches and taking a bath is for the weak. The ideal is to take advantage of the paradisiacal setting, the calm waters of the surrounding lagoons to take various trips such as rafting, kayaking and banana boating on the Banana River; permeate the dunes and beaches on buggy rides for a whole day and practice kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing with the winds that blow.
Kitesurfing
Kitesurfing, a mix of windsurfing, surfing, sailing and paragliding, is a popular practice nowadays. Cumbuco’s beaches are perfect for practicing, beginners who want to take on the adventure can take basic classes at inns and hotels. The best time to practice is from February to July, when the trade winds blow.
Raft
A very common practice in Cumbuco are raft rides. And no wonder, as we are talking about a fishing village. These tours can be taken with native guides and contemplate untouched landscapes.
Jet-ski
For those who enjoy driving a jet-ski through the calm waters, the Banana River is the perfect place for quick trips on the water to enjoy nature.
Bug
One of the most popular tours taken by tourists is the buggy tour that starts in the village of Cumbuco, stops at the Parnamirim lagoon for contemplation, bathing and practicing skibunda, continues through the dunes to Lagoa do Banana and passes through Lagoa Águas Cristalinas and ends at Barra Beach Lagoon. The tours last all day.
Kayak
In addition to jet-skiing, the Banana lagoon is perfect for kayaking and banana boat trips. Bathing in the crystal clear waters is relaxing and invigorating. Stay until late afternoon to enjoy the sunset.
The beaches of Cumbuco enchant with their beauty. It is the most visited place by kitesurfers, windsurfers and surfers due to the good winds that blow in the town and the calm waters that persist on all the beaches. The busiest is Cumbuco as it is right in the center and is better structured, but there is nothing stopping you from taking walks through the deserted Barra do Cauípe and Tabuba, which are also delicious.

Better located, this beach is in the center and is the one that attracts the most visitors. It is the starting point for various tours, including: horse riding, quad biking and buggies to more distant beaches. With waters suitable for water sports from July to February, it welcomes numerous sportspeople, such as surfers. Windsurfing, kitesurfing and even paragliding. The extensive waterfront is home to restaurants, stalls and inns.

Barra do Cauípe Beach
This extensive beach tends to attract kitesurfers due to the good winds that blow there. In the right corner, a lagoon is one of the beach’s attractions. Bathers with families also arrive by buggy to enjoy the calm, warm waters. The beach is further away, 10 km from Cumbuco Beach, but it’s worth it for the view.
Tabuba Beach
This beach is the most isolated of all with no sign of construction or any infrastructure and that is exactly what makes it so interesting and paradisiacal. It has a long strip of sand and clear, calm waters, ideal for kitesurfing.
From July to February, good winds blow in the region and it is sunny all day, ideal for nautical and outdoor activities.
Avoid traveling in March, April and May when the rains are more frequent and you cannot enjoy the beaches. Between August and December the weather is dry.
By car:
From the south, follow BR-116 or BR-101 until Natal, then BR-104 until Acarati and CE-040 until Fortaleza. Coming from Teresina or Belém, follow BR-222.
By airplane:
Daily flights depart from the main Brazilian capitals to Pinto Martins airport, in Fortaleza. From there, just take a bus from the bus station or hire a taxi that charges around R$120 for the transfer.
By bus:
If you are in Fortaleza, just take the Empresa Vitória bus that takes you to Cumbuco.
*To get around the village, the best option is the buggies that travel along the beaches in the middle of the dunes.
