Weekend at Eco Resort San Thomaz

Weekend at Eco Resort San Thomaz

South America

The state of Rio is much more than just the beach. Proof of this is the Coffee Valley, a region that, according to the holy Wikipedia, was once responsible for producing 75% of the coffee consumed in the world. Those times are long gone, but today the place has gained another attraction: tourism. That’s what I did last weekend, on my first trip since returning to Brazil two months ago. We traveled at the invitation of Eco Resort Chalés San Thomaz

The Eco Resort San Thomaz is in Minas Gerais almost by accident – it is practically on the border with Rio de Janeiro and all you need to do is cross a nice bridge, a few meters from the entrance to the Resort, to change state. This different climate, which combines the Rio accent with the beginnings of Minas Gerais, already won me over at first glance, while I was driving along the RJ-151 highway and had not yet reached my destination. We were certain that Vale do Café deserves a longer stay, with time to explore the various farms and cities in the region. When we arrived, the weekend got even better, as there were other members of the Brazilian Travel Bloggers Network there.

The San Thomaz Resort

The first thing that catches your eye is nature. San Thomaz is very green, and has lakes (with pedal boats), gardens and an ecological trail. Options include an amateur golf course, a tennis court, a football court, a swimming pool, a steam room, a walking track, a toy room and a horse cart. A bar and games room are also available.

There are 15 chalets in the luxury, superluxury and standard categories. All rooms are comfortable and have a balcony, private parking, air conditioning system, refrigerator and TV. The super-luxury rooms also have a fireplace and hot tub.

How to get

Resort San Thomaz is located in a district called Porto das Flores. Just over two hours separate the place from the capital of Rio de Janeiro, and around one is enough to reach Juiz de Fora. The distance to the capital of Minas Gerais is greater – it took us 5 hours to make the journey.

For those coming from Rio, simply follow BR 040. Just after the entrance to the municipality of Levy Gasparian and before the border between Minas and Rio there is an exit on the right, towards Valença, Rio das Flores, Monte Serrat, Museu Rodoviário. From there just follow the signs to Rio das Flores.

Anyone coming from Juiz de Fora (or BH) should turn right just after the tollbooth and continue to Mont Serrat. From there, head towards Valença – but be careful because there is no sign indicating the way. The best thing to do is ask the locals. More information here.
