3 home remedies for brown discharge

Natural treatments

Brown discharge, although it may seem worrying, is usually not a sign of a serious problem and happens especially at the end of menstruation or when taking hormonal medications for thyroid problems, for example.

However, this type of discharge can also indicate more serious situations that require treatment, such as a gonorrhea infection or even pelvic inflammatory disease, and it is always advisable to consult a gynecologist.

While you wait for your appointment, there are some natural treatments that can help alleviate the discomfort caused by discharge, but they should not replace medical treatment. See the main causes of brown discharge and when to worry.

1. Tea tree essential oil

Melaleuca, also known as tea tree or tea tree, is a medicinal plant with strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that help fight various types of infections in the vaginal and genital region, relieving symptoms more quickly.

Ingredients

  • 5 to 10 drops of tea tree essential oil;
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, sweet almond or olive oil.

Preparation mode

Mix the ingredients and apply to the external region of the vagina once a day for a maximum of 6 days in a row. Do not apply inside the vaginal canal.

Before applying tea tree essential oil to the vaginal region, you should check if you are allergic to this oil and, therefore, it is recommended to apply a drop of tea tree oil to the skin on the back of your hand. If allergy symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling or the formation of small blisters appear on your hand, you should wash your skin and not use tea tree oil as a home remedy for brown discharge.

Tea tree essential oil should not be used by pregnant women.

2. Juniper tea

Since brown discharge can also often be caused by a gonorrhea infection, juniper tea can also be an excellent natural option, as this is a plant traditionally used to treat these types of cases, due to its antimicrobial and antiseptics.

Ingredients

  • 1 liter of water;
  • 1 tablespoon chopped juniper berries.

Preparation mode

Place the water and juniper berries in a pan and bring to a boil. After boiling, leave the heat on for another 7 to 10 minutes. At the end of this time, let it cool covered for 10 minutes. After that, the mixture must be strained and drunk between meals.

Juniper tea may also have a sleep-inducing effect, so some people may feel sleepy after taking it.

Juniper should not be used by pregnant or lactating women or those with nephritis. If you suspect pregnancy, it is recommended that, before using juniper, a pregnancy test is carried out, as juniper can cause miscarriage by increasing uterine contractions.

3. Fenugreek tea

Fenugreek is a medicinal plant that helps regulate hormonal levels, which is why it can be used to treat various types of problems related to the female genital system. In addition, it also has anti-inflammatory properties that relieve the pain caused by polycystic ovary.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds;
  • 250 mL of cold water.

Preparation mode

Mix the ingredients in a container and let it rest for at least 3 hours. Then pour it into another container and let it boil for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain and let cool. Take 1 cup of tea up to 3 times a day.

Fenugreek should not be used by pregnant women as it can stimulate uterine contractions and induce labor. This plant should also not be used by children, or by women undergoing hormone-sensitive cancer treatment, such as breast cancer, for example.
