Deep Dish Pizza Pizzeria Uno

Deep Dish Pizza Pizzeria Uno

North America

When I started looking for where to eat in Chicago I found several people talking about this “deep dish pizza”. Some loved it, others found it boring and some hated it. A few days before leaving for the city, I spoke to someone who had already been there and she also told me “eat the deep dish pizza”.

I had that in mind, but I ended up forgetting to look for a place to eat. At first I thought only one restaurant served it, but then I discovered that it is a typical dish of the city. I spent the first day in Chicago thinking about it, but I didn’t know where I could find it. Until in line “Willis Tower”tallest building in the city, I read about the Pizzeria Uno, the creator of deep dish pizza. It is said that its founder was the one who invented deep dish pizza in 1943, but this is not an official version.

Unintentionally, after walking a long way, I ended up at the East Ohio, pizzeria street. And I got to try the most original pizza in Chicago.

What is deep dish pizza

Deep dish pizza is nothing more than a pie that has a border of approximately 3 centimeters and has several toppings. The original version (Number one) It has lots of cheese, tomato sauce, mushrooms, fresh sausage, pepperoni, onions and green peppers. Prices vary by size: Individual – US$9.59 – Small – US$18.29 – Medium US$23.29 – Large – US$27.29.

It also has other flavors, which are even cheaper than Numero Uno: four cheeses, vegetarian, spinach and others.

The dough for deep dish pizza is very similar to pies with the well-known shortcrust pastry. So, forget “our” pizza when looking for where to eat in Chicago. Despite the difference, I really liked this “pizza pie” which is round and very well served.

Pizzeria Uno is dark and has outdoor tables. The place is very reminiscent of the look of American bars with painted walls full of photos and advertisements hanging. Prepare to face queues. If you prefer, eat at the bar. As I was alone, I did this and didn’t need to join the waiting line, which already had more than 15 people in front of me.

In the end, it was worth the search for where to eat deep dish pizza in Chicago. I really liked the flavor and, I confess, I feel like eating it from time to time here in Brazil.

How much does it cost

As I was alone, I ordered the individual Numero Uno (traditional) (9.59) and drank Coca Cola (about 3 dollars with refill). In the end, with the fees, I spent less than 15 dollars and still couldn’t eat the whole pizza.
