Check out one of Chicago's best-known spots

North America

Chicago It is a city that is cold in winter and hot in summer. In fact, it is known for its snow and freshwater beaches. And it is on the shore of Lake Michigan that there is one of the most beautiful places in the city: the Navy Pier.

If you go to Chicago, set aside a few hours to visit this place. As I went in October, it was very cold, around 4 degrees, although the day was beautiful, so I struggled a little being outside, but it was worth it.

Navy Pier, which is located on the Near North Side, has attractions for the whole family. Shops, restaurants and even the famous ferris wheel that has an incredible view of the city.

How to get to Navy Pier

On the Sunday I visited the place, the Chicago Marathon was taking place, so the streets were blocked to traffic and, after asking police officers and residents (several times and they were all very helpful), I ended up walking along a path of about a hour. On the way back, I managed to catch a bus to Michigan Avenue. There is a bus stop, a kind of terminal, right next to Navy Pier, which makes it easy to get to and from there.

History

Created in 1916, the original idea was for the pier to serve as a support for loading and unloading, but also to offer entertainment for those who were there.

In the 90s, after several ups and downs, the pier gained a new controller, who renovated the entire structure, placing shops, cinemas and restaurants on site.

What to do

Walking aimlessly is one of Navy Pier’s biggest attractions: discovering, observing and stopping to capture moments, shop, drink and eat. One of the best moments of my trip to Chicago was sitting on one of the benches at Navy Pier, putting on my headphones, listening to some music and observing the city’s beautiful buildings and the contrast with the incredible blue river. For that alone it would have been worth it.

But Navy Pier has many other attractions. My favorite was ferris wheel, which was opened in 1955 and can be seen from the top of several buildings in the city. Tickets for a tour of it cost 6 dollars. From up there, you can feel the immensity of the lake and see how beautiful the city is. The amusement park also has other attractions.

An important tip for those who are not visiting in the summer: In addition to the cold, it is very windy there. Therefore, Don’t forget to take a coat. Another cool thing is that at Navy Pier there are many little shops They sell magnets and crafts to take as souvenirs of your trip. There is also one of the stores Garrett Popcornfamous for selling people’s favorite popcorn Oprah Winfrey.

I spent about three hours at Navy Pier and left there wanting to stay longer. If I return to Chicago, I will definitely include this tour again in my itinerary.
