North America

If we think about what to do in Washingtoncapital two USAwe will soon remember the White House. It’s something like talking about Rio and think about Christ or Sugarloaf Mountain.

During a weekend in Washington, the This World is Ours You managed to see almost all the essential points of the city and from this post you will give tips on what to do in the city.

What to do in Washington

Almost never Washington DC is on the main list of Brazilians going to the United States. Of course, if you are looking for shopping or big parties and shows, this is not the ideal place. But if you go to the country and are looking for interesting destinations, reserve at least two days for the city.

With just over 600 thousand inhabitants, Washington DC has beautiful parks, greenery in many corners and a population that loves running and exercising. At least, that’s what I noticed during the weekend I was there. Everywhere I looked, I found people exercising. But, besides all this, one great thing about Washington is that practically the entire city has subway lines, which makes life easier for any tourist.

If it’s your first time in the city, I suggest the capital’s very characteristic tours. White House, Capitol, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, World War 2 Memorial, Washington Monument and Air and Space Museum need to be on your list. Also, set aside an hour to go up to the old Post Office building, as the blog suggests Traveler’s Apprentice, and have an incredible view of the city. O Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon (which pays homage to those killed in the September 11, 2001 attack that occurred there) should also be on the list. In the next posts, I will detail more about each of these points.

Arriving in Washington

As I was already in the United States, I went down to Aeroporto Ronald Reagan, which is national and has a metro station. There, the exit is almost at the station and it was very easy to get to the Downtown area. In fact, my hotel, the Washington Plazait was about a 10-minute walk from White House and was close to McPherson Sq Station.

Where to eat

I actually didn’t eat very well in the city. But not for lack of options. The first lunch was inside the Capitol (Yes! There is a tour of the Capitol and I will talk about that in a future post). So, I ended up eating a pretty good pasta for a pretty good price too.

At night, I chose the PJ Clarkes. The burger chain has already won as the best in São Paulo. As on the way to the White House I saw a branch of the chain near the hotel, I decided to have dinner there. I went and came back by taxi and only paid 5 dollars each way. The waiter was very attentive and the burger was good, but exceptional. However, it was worth the visit.

The next day, I ended up taking a break from sightseeing outside of Downtown and ate at a Mc Donalds near the White House. I confess that I regretted it a lot. In addition to the snack not being that good, the place was poorly attended. I got scared. A man and a woman kept an eye on me and came to ask for a piece of my lunch. At first, I pretended not to understand, but then, as they kept looking at me, I gave them a piece and left.

Gifts

Be careful not to be deceived. No shopping at the store near the White House. Search the trucks scattered around the city. Almost everyone has the same price, but they don’t like to negotiate.

A funny story happened to me. I wanted to buy an Obama doll and in all the trucks the price was similar: 12 to 14 dollars. However, on Sunday, when I decided to go to the old Post Office building, I ended up going into some stores there. I went to one and asked how much the doll cost, but I got the price wrong and said I would take it. When I got to the register, the man told me it cost “19.99” (I had understood 9.99). I told him I wouldn’t take it because it was too expensive. Even so, he didn’t want to negotiate.

I went to the store next door and saw that the doll was also selling for 19.99. I said I wouldn’t take it because it was 12 dollars on the street. The woman decided to negotiate and, in the end, I only paid 7 dollars. That’s exploration.

It is worth it

Ultimately, Washington is a city worth visiting. In the next posts, I will detail each attraction I visited in the American capital.
