Makoto is Bal Harbour’s Japanese restaurant, luxury mall in Miami and one of the best Japanese restaurants in the city, by the way. I had already been there on a few occasions, but this time I had a special lunch, as I was invited to taste the chef’s specialties.
Bal Harbor Japanese Restaurant
We started with a delicious green watercress salad (Makoto House Salad), super well seasoned and with tempura pieces that gave it a special crunchy flavor.

Then came the Spicy Truna Crispy Rice, tuna sushi with that delicious rice that sticks a little in your teeth – it’s best to say the names of the dishes in English, as that’s how you’ll have to order if you go to Makoto, a Japanese restaurant in Bal Harbour.

We also ate Hamachi Ponzu – thin slices of golden sashimi with Ponzu sauce and jalapenos (green pepper) on top and Short Rib Robata – rib skewers.
As I love salmon, I also ordered some salmon rolls with avocado.

Beer and dessert
Japanese Sapporo beer accompanied the meal and to finish, we were surprised with a little cake to eat while praying, the chef’s suggestion, very welcome! But for sake lovers, the menu is quite varied and also offers a range of drinks, including Asian cocktails. Our lunch at Bal Harbor’s Japanese restaurant couldn’t be more perfect.
Makoto’s story
It’s no surprise that Makoto is a success, after all, the owner is the same as the famous New York restaurants Buddakan and Morimoto; Sushi man Makoto Okuma completed 10 years of training in Japan and also worked in Washington, DC at the famous Sushi Toro restaurant and with Chef Masaharu Morimoto, one of the greatest in Japanese cuisine. In other words, this Japanese restaurant in Bal Harbor has history.
The environment
In addition to offering authentic Japanese cuisine, Makoto’s atmosphere is sophisticated and contemporary and has three separate spaces. In addition to the sushi bar, there are two pleasant balconies: one that overlooks the shopping mall and the other with trees, in the center of Bal Harbor, a luxury shopping mall in Miami.
It is worth remembering that reservations are recommended at all restaurants in Miami.
