On Tuesday night, 24, we met the winners of the 27th edition of the Veja Rio Comer & Drink 2023 Award, which took place at the Fairmont Hotel in Copacabana. A significant team of Rio de Janeiro gastronomy is present, as well as we at You Must Go!, after all, our editor-in-chief Renata Araújo is part of Veja Rio’s team of columnists. Therefore, we made the full coverage to be able to share here all the details of the oldest prize in Rio. In all, there were 37 categories that chose the best bars, restaurants and food in the city. Arduous task for the jury, after all, in this last year Rio de Janeiro has been gaining great gastronomic options, for our luck. So let’s go to the winners!

Winners of the Veja Rio Comer & Drink 20 Award
It was a night of celebration and fraternization in favor of gastronomy, with the presence of chefs, journalists, advisors, entrepreneurs, confectioners, mixologists and workers in the sector. The ceremony was conducted by actress Erika Januza and Veja Rio’s editor-in-chief, Fernanda Thedim. Various personalities such as artists, politicians and businessmen were responsible for delivering the awards.

Bars and Foods by Veja Rio jury
Empório Jardim, by chef Paula Prandini, guaranteed another award for best breakfast in Rio! Pioneer in the concept of serving breakfast all day, this year opened another beautiful house in the palace of Firjan, in Botafogo. The Slow Bakery, artisan bakery with units in Leblon, Botafogo and Jardim Botânico, took the title of best bread in Rio.
The best beer list was for Brewteco, by businessman and partner Rafael Amaral, known for hundreds of labels. The gastrobar Nosso, in Ipanema, by chef Bruno Katz, was elected the best place to go two, while Sel D’Ipanema won first place in the category of best kiosk in Rio. Finally, Alex Mesquita was consecrated the Bartender of the Year for his work in the trendy Elena, who have been busying the Garden.
Best restaurants in Rio
The Càm O’n, by chef Ana Carolina Garcia, who arrived this year in the South Zone, in Botafogo, took the award for best Asian in Rio! Meanwhile, Rudo, in Ipanema, chef Danilo Parah, was voted the best Brazilian food restaurant, with its affective cuisine and influences from the Northeast and Southeast regions.
We are certainly very happy and proud of the victory of the Malta Beef Club in the category of best meat in Rio ! After all, you have read here at YMG! that journalist Renata Araújo is an Ambassador of the group. In addition, the Ocyá, under the command of chef Gerônimo Athuel, took the trophy of best fish and seafood restaurant.
High Gastronomy in Eating & Drinking
The star chef Rafa Costa e Silva received the title of best author cuisine with his refined Lasai. With a Michelin star, the counter has only eight seats. Thus, the title of the best Japanese restaurant in Rio was with Haru, in Copacabana, of chef and businessman Menandro Rodrigues.
Among the new categories, for example, is the best modern trattoria, which had as winner the Babbo Osteria, in Ipanema, by dear chef Elia Schramm. And in Vale a Viagem, however, three establishments were awarded in the Serra, in Niterói and Búzios. In the latter, the sensational Rocka, in Búzios, by chef Gustavo Rinkevich, took the best.
The best of Rio
The renowned chef Claude Troisgros took the best in the French category with Chez Claude. In fact, a great restaurant! In the kitchen of the excellent House 201, novelty in the Botanical Garden, João Paulo Frankenfeld was honored as a revelation chef. The chef of the year trophy was for Rafa Gomes, who runs Itacoa, Tiara and TinTin.
In addition, another new category was the best hotel kitchen, represented by Cipriani, the Italian starred of Belmond Copacabana Palace. The best pizza in Rio was iron and flour, from irreverent chef Sei Shiroma, while Lima, from chef Marco Espinoza, secured the award for best Peruvian, and finally the Portuguese Ranch considered the best Portuguese house in the city.
Social Cause and Sustainability
Two prominent names in the areas of sustainability and social cause were also awarded. Thus, chef Tati Lund, from .Org Bistrô, was awarded for her sustainable initiatives in the Barra restaurant, while João Diamante, in front of the collaborative cafeteria É Nóis won in the category Social Cause.
