Bichectomy is an aesthetic surgical procedure that aims to remove the small pockets of fat located in the cheek region, the Bichat glands, which makes the face less voluminous, thinner and highlights the cheekbone.
This procedure is simple and quick, carried out under local anesthesia and does not leave any visible scar, as the cuts are made inside the cheek. After surgery, it is common for the face to become more swollen and, for this reason, it is recommended to apply cold compresses to the area to help reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort.

How it is made
Bichectomy can be performed by a plastic surgeon or dentist and can be done in the office, because it is a simple, quick procedure and carried out under local anesthesia.
To remove the Bichat glands, a small cut, approximately 5 mm, is made inside the cheek, where the excess fat that has accumulated is removed. Then, the cut is closed, finishing the surgery.
In general, the stitches placed on the inside of the cheek are naturally reabsorbed within approximately 1 week, however it is common for the face to remain swollen for longer due to inflammation of the facial tissues, which is considered normal. Despite this, there are some precautions that help speed up recovery, allowing you to see results sooner.
Possible risks
Bichectomy is a simple surgery with a low risk of complications, however, like any surgical procedure, it is possible to observe in some cases:
- Infection the surgery site: it is a risk that is associated with all types of surgery due to the cut caused to the skin, but which is normally avoided with the use of antibiotics that can be indicated before or after the procedure;
- Facial paralysis temporary or permanent, which may arise if a facial nerve is accidentally cut;
- Reduced saliva production: it is more common in more complicated surgeries in which the salivary glands may be damaged when removing excess fat.
To reduce the risks, it is recommended that the procedure be carried out by trained professionals, in addition to being indicated only in cases where the volume caused by fat pockets is excessive.
Recovery after bichectomy
Recovery from surgery to slim the face lasts, in most cases, about 1 month and is not painful, however, to make recovery easier, the use of anti-inflammatory medications may be recommended to reduce inflammation of the facial tissues. and, consequently, swelling, and painkillers to reduce and avoid pain.
Furthermore, during recovery it is important to take other precautions such as:
- Apply cold compresses on the face 3 to 4 times a day for 1 week;
- Sleep with the head of the bed raised until the swelling of the face disappears;
- Go on a soft diet during the first 10 days to avoid opening the cuts.
However, it is possible to return to work the day after surgery, and the only special care you should take is to avoid prolonged sun exposure and physical exertion, such as running or lifting very heavy objects, for example.
