Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical exfoliation procedure that aims to promote skin rejuvenation by removing dead cells, and can be recommended to treat wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars and lighten skin blemishes.
The procedure must be carried out by a dermatologist or dermatofunctional physiotherapist using a specific device or using specific creams.
Typically, 5 to 12 sessions are required, depending on the objective of the treatment, each lasting an average of 30 minutes, to achieve the desired result.

What is it for
Microdermabrasion can be performed to:
- Smooth fine lines and wrinkles;
- Lighten pigmentation spots;
- Eliminate small stretch marks, especially those that are still red;
- Eliminate acne scars;
- Reduce other skin imperfections.
Furthermore, it can be used to treat rhinophyma, which is a disease characterized by the presence of masses in the nose, which, when in large quantities, can cause nasal obstruction. Learn more about rhinophyma.
Types of microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion can be of two types:
- Peeling the crystalin which a small suction device is used to remove the most superficial layer of the skin and stimulate collagen production;
- Peeling the diamondin which a deep exfoliation of the skin is carried out, being efficient for removing blemishes and combating wrinkles.
In addition, there is also home microdermabrasion, without the use of devices, in which an exfoliating cream is used and must be applied to the skin using circular movements in the area.
The type of microdermabrasion to be performed must be indicated by the dermatologist or trained aesthetics professional according to the objective of the treatment and skin characteristics.
How it is made
Microdermabrasion must be performed in a dermatologist’s office or in an aesthetic clinic specializing in this procedure and is performed using a device that sprays aluminum oxide crystals onto the skin, removing its most superficial layer. Then, vacuum suction is carried out to remove all residues.
In the case of microdermabrasion performed with creams, simply apply the product to the desired area and rub it for a few seconds, then wash the skin. Typically, dermabrasion creams contain crystals that stimulate the skin’s microcirculation and remove dead cells, providing healthier-looking skin.
Microdermabrasion can be done on the face, chest, neck, arms or hands, but this procedure may require several sessions to achieve a satisfactory result.
Care after microdermabrasion
After microdermabrasion it is important to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen. Furthermore, it is not recommended to apply any product or cream to your face that is not recommended by a professional, as they can cause skin irritation.
After the procedure, it is common for there to be mild pain, minor swelling or bleeding, as well as increased sensitivity. If skin care is not followed as recommended by the dermatologist or dermatofunctional physiotherapist, the skin may darken or lighten.
