How to pay and how much does it cost?

One new tourist tax in Cancun began to be required of foreigners, at the beginning of April 2021, who visit this region of Mexico.

But in fact, the charge is made by the State of Quintana Roo, where several other famous destinations are located, including Riviera Maya.

New tourist tax in Cancún

Since April 1, 2021, the State of Quintana Roo started demanding the payment of a new tourism tax. Here are important cities such as Cancun, Carmen beach, Tulum, Women Island, Cumulative, Cozumelamong others.

According to the government, the new tax is due to the “use and enjoyment of public domain assets” of the State. So, as we show below, the payment is mandatory for foreign tourists over 15 years old.

A authentication and verification of proof of the new rate takes place at exit from the stateno Cancun airport, for example. Payment can be made before or during the trip.

In other words, it’s one more thing to pay attention to when traveling to your destination. The fee

The value of the tourist tax in Cancún and other cities in the region is $224 Mexican pesosfence US$ 12 (12 dollars or R$67) at the current exchange rate*. Under 15 years old are exempt.

How to pay the tourist tax in Cancún?

Payment of the new fee can be made before the trip or even during your stay in Quintana Roo. The conference will be held when you leave the State, upon boarding at the airport.

The easiest way is to pay via the website VISITAX. Filling out is quick and easy and you can pay with an international credit card.

Then see the requested data:

  • Date of return or departure from the State;
  • Number of people traveling with you;
  • Name, idea and passport number of travelers;
  • Credit card details.

But the good news is that anyone traveling in groups or familiesyou can fill out the form and pay in one go, without having to register multiple times.

According to the government, there is still the possibility of pay the fee in cash at the airport itself. However, at first I would avoid it, as there are reports of Brazilians who did not find the promised modules for their intended purpose.

In other words, to avoid headaches, try to do it online in advance.

Don’t confuse fees or requirements

This is a new rate, so do not confuse with another tax charged when checking in or checking out of your hotel in Cancún, which is an “Environmental Sanitation Impuesto” of around $27 Mexican pesos* (around US$1.30).

Tax objectives

Nobody likes new taxes, but the Government of Quintana Roo says the intention is to create jobs, boost the local economy and help finance the State’s tourism industry.

In 2021 alone, the forecast is that revenue for the State coffers from the tourism tax in Cancún will be between US$30 million and US$45 million.
