Mineral oil is a substance obtained through the refinement of petroleum that has moisturizing properties for the skin.

In pharmacies, this oil can also be known as petroleum jelly or liquid paraffin, and is sold for medicinal use, due to its laxative properties that help cleanse the intestine, helping to treat constipation.

This oil can be applied directly to the skin or mixed with creams or hair products, for example, to increase its absorption and guarantee other benefits. Mineral oil is a very versatile product that can be found in pharmacies. However, despite being considered safe, it is important that before starting its application, a doctor is consulted.

Mineral oil is used for:

1. Skin hydration

Due to its moisturizing properties, mineral oil is ideal for moisturizing dry or cold-sensitized skin. It is especially effective in treating very dry skin, due to its ability to retain water and nourish the skin quickly and effectively. Mineral oil is included in the vast majority of beauty products, such as makeup, creams or products to moisturize the skin, due to its high moisturizing power.

How to use: The oil can be applied pure, directly to the skin, or mixed with a moisturizing cream, for example, to increase its absorption. The oil should only be applied to intact skin, where there are no open wounds or any signs of infection.

2. Soothes the skin in cases of burns

In cases of sunburn, mineral oil is a great resource for hydrating and calming the skin, helping to alleviate symptoms of discomfort, redness, dryness and burning that appear after excessive exposure to the sun.

Furthermore, mineral oil is also ideal for soothing diaper rash, which is common in babies. In these cases, it is recommended to use perfume-free and alcohol-free baby mineral oil to prevent skin allergy reactions.

How to use: Apply to the skin 2 to 3 times a day and let it air dry.

3. Nail polish dryer

Mineral oil can also be used as a nail polish dryer, preventing dirt from sticking to the nail polish, while also promoting good hydration for dry cuticles. Furthermore, this oil is often present in the composition of conventional nail drying oils from some well-known brands.

How to use: Place the mineral oil in a spray container and then gently spray onto the painted nails, 15 cm away from your hands.

4. Acts as a makeup remover

Mineral oil also serves to moisturize dry and brittle hair, providing shine and softness to the strands. However, it is recommended that it only be used once a week, so as not to leave the hair oily and contribute to the appearance of scalp flaking.

How to use: you should apply a few drops to damp hair after showering, especially along the length of the strands, avoiding the hair roots, letting it rest for 3 to 5 minutes and using a soft bristle brush or wide-toothed comb for better absorption into the strands. .

6. Stimulate bowel function

Mineral oil also has laxative properties, stimulating intestinal contractions and promoting the movement of fecal matter, which helps to temporarily combat constipation.

How to use: To have a laxative effect, it is generally recommended to drink 1 tablespoon of mineral oil, which is equivalent to approximately 15 ml, at night and then upon waking up.
