This week the Reopening of the Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, in Rio. After being closed for a year for an extensive renovation, the biggest since its inauguration 30 years ago, the House offers a diverse cultural space, with theater, music, cinema and visual arts. With a privileged location, on Avenida Vieira Souto, there is no one who passes by and doesn’t admire the beautiful architecture of the house.

The renovation and modernization were sponsored by the Swiss company Omega, which during the Rio 2016 Olympics installed its Theme House there. There are two theaters, three cinemas, an event hall with sea views, multipurpose rooms, an art gallery and a space for gastronomy. One of the new features is a music studio for rehearsals and recordings, open to everyone.

On the third floor of the House, the restaurant offers breakfast every Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 1pm. And the bonus of the beach view!
New programming
A House of Culture brings together lectures, workshops, shows and cultural projects. And it reopened with full force! In the Gallery, a fun exhibition that portrays the daily life of Piscinão de Ramos. São Paulo photographer Julio Bittencourt spent three years following the day-to-day life of the place.
Until October 2nd, the House will host FESTLIP, the International Portuguese Language Theater Festival. In its 8th edition, the honoree is Nelson Rodrigues. Actors from Angola, Portugal, Cape Verde and Brazil will perform shows, workshops, lectures and more in some houses and theaters in the city. At the Casa de Cultura, Cape Verdean dancers from the Raiz di Polon company will teach contemporary African dance steps, and the unusual exhibition All nudity will be punished open to the public. At Teatro Laura Alvim, the premiere is on October 11th with the series “Música na Laura”. There will be two attractions per month, always on Tuesdays, at 8pm, and a 1h30 show. Chay Suede and Diogo Strauz will present their Aymoréco project on the first day. Oh, and the ticket price is R$10.
At Estúdio Laura, young people between 15 and 29 years old who participate in the Território Culturais/Favela Criativa project will be able to take a two-month recording and music production course. The objective is to reinforce music as an instrument of overcoming and transformation.
