Chinese pregnancy chart (know the baby’s gender)

Pregnancy

The Chinese table is a method based on Chinese astrology that is capable of guessing the baby’s sex through the month of conception and the mother’s lunar age.

Although there are several popular reports that it actually works, the Chinese table is not scientifically proven and, therefore, is not accepted by the scientific community.

It is recommended that pregnant women make an appointment with an obstetrician and undergo tests supported by the medical community, such as an ultrasound, after 16 weeks, or a fetal sexing test, after the 8th week of pregnancy. See proven ways to find out the baby’s sex.

What is the theory of the Chinese table

The Chinese table is based on a chart that was discovered more than 700 years ago in a tomb near Beijing, in which the entire method that is now known as the “Chinese table” was described. The table does not appear to be based on any credible source or study.

To use the Chinese table you must:

  1. Discover a woman’s “lunar age”: which can be done by adding “+1” to the age at which you became pregnant, as long as you were not born in January or February;
  2. Understand in which month conception occurred of the baby;
  3. Cross the data previous ones in the Chinese table.

When crossing the data, the pregnant woman obtains a square with a color that corresponds to the baby’s sex, as shown in the image.

Because the table is unreliable

Although there are several popular reports of the table’s effectiveness, as well as reports indicating an efficiency rate of between 50 and 93%, these reports do not appear to be based on any scientific research and therefore cannot be used as a guarantee of its effectiveness.

Furthermore, according to a study carried out in Sweden between 1973 and 2006, where the Chinese table was applied to more than 2 million births, the result was not very motivating, indicating a success rate of approximately 50%, which can be compared with the method of tossing a coin and finding out the sex of the child based on the probability of heads or tails.

Another study, not directly related to the Chinese table, but which also explored the issue of whether the moment of sexual intercourse could influence the sex of the baby, also did not find any relationship between these two variables, thus contradicting one of the data required by the Chinese table.

Reliable methods to find out the baby’s sex

The only proven tests/methods to find out the baby’s sex are:

  • Obstetric ultrasoundafter 16 weeks of pregnancy;
  • Fetal sexing examafter 8 weeks.

These tests can be ordered by the obstetrician and, therefore, it is recommended to consult this medical specialty whenever you want to know the sex of the baby.
