A wedding is a beautiful celebration of love, with lots of joy, fun and hope, but there are some things guests hate at weddings.

Naturally, as it’s your and your partner’s party, you can do whatever you wish, but if you want your guests to have as much fun as you, it’s a good idea to consider this list when planning your party.

things guests hate at weddings

1. Waiting too long in the thank you line

It’s common for the couple to want to thank all the guests for coming, but no one likes to spend a lot of time in the thank you line and that’s one of the things that guests hate at weddings.

Instead of creating a specific line for this purpose, you can thank your guests during the wedding. This is more personal and won’t leave them waiting in a long line just to hear “thank you.”

2. Pay to have a drink

It’s an honor to be invited to a wedding, but who wants to spend money to enjoy a drink at the party?

If your budget doesn’t allow for an open bar, consider doing something more limited, but don’t require your customers to pay for drinks.

In fact, there are no rules saying you need to have a wedding with an open bar. Be creative within your budget and make every guest feel great.

3. Long ceremonies

Let’s be honest: most guests look forward to your reception. Having a long outdoor ceremony in the middle of summer, for example, can make them feel uncomfortable in the heat.

When planning your wedding, be sure to also plan for your guests’ comfort.

4. Dress code

Asking everyone who attends your wedding to wear a specific outfit is a bit frustrating.

Not all women may have a mid-length peach dress in their closet and they will have to spend money to acquire it – and most likely will not wear the dress again.

Don’t impose financial restrictions on your guests. Trust them to dress as they see fit for the occasion.

5. Limited food options

Not all of your guests have the same food preferences as you, and not being able to eat well during the party is one of the things guests hate about weddings.

Take this into consideration when putting together the menu.

You can, for example, consider including some vegetarian options if you know that some guests have this dietary restriction.

Likewise, if you are vegetarian, don’t expect all your guests to be too.

6. Few chairs for the ceremony

It is essential that you have enough chairs for the ceremony.

You might think that a 15-minute ceremony isn’t that long and that some people can stand if there aren’t enough chairs for everyone, but sitting at a wedding is the least amount of comfort guests expect.

One of the things that guests hate at weddings, without a doubt, is not having anywhere to sit.

Always think that some people may arrive 30 minutes early and not having anywhere to sit can be very tiring and uncomfortable.

7. Overly long speeches and tiring slideshows are among the things guests hate at weddings

Try to limit your speeches to no more than 5 minutes. Your guests won’t be happy to hear stories that don’t represent them for long.

Plus, people aren’t usually interested in slideshows unless they’re in them.

Consider shortening the length of your speech if you have something very long planned, and make sure your slideshow, if you have one, is quick and interesting for everyone.
