Commercial repellents are based on a substance called DEET (developed by the US army in 1946) which, according to ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency) can, in concentrations above 30%, cause allergies or more serious health problems.

Having the possibility of making your repellent based on natural ingredients is always better, right?

Homemade insect repellent

1 – Recipe for homemade repellent based on dried herbs

Ingredients:

  • Herbs of your choice (we recommend citronella, mint, lavender, peppermint or nepenta);
  • Previously boiled water (200 ml);
  • Witch hazel leaves, if you don’t have them you can replace them with alcohol;
  • Bottle with spray cap;
  • Tip – For the homemade repellent to be more effective, we recommend using at least one type of mint.

How to make:

Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of herbs to 200 ml of previously boiled water. Stir to mix well and then cover to keep the volatile oils active.

Once the compound has cooled you should strain the herbs and then add a cup of alcohol and witch hazel. Place the compound in a spray bottle and leave it in the refrigerator.

2 – Recipe for repellent with cloves

Ingredients:

  • 10 grams of cloves
  • 500 ml cereal alcohol
  • 100 ml of almond oil

How to make:

The first step is to mix the cloves with grain alcohol, let it rest for a day. Afterwards, strain and add the almond oil so that it has a repellent consistency.

3 – Essence oil-based repellent recipe

Ingredients:

  • Essential oil of your choice (we recommend rosemary, citronella, nepenta or eucalyptus);
  • Previously boiled water;
  • Bottle with spray cap;
  • Witch hazel leaves;
  • Vegetable glycerin (this item is optional).

How to make:

The first step is to fill the spray bottle halfway with the water you boiled. Then add the witch hazel leaves until you almost reach the top. Whoever decided to use glycerin should add ½ spoon to the mixture. The last step is to add between 30 and 50 drops of your preferred essence oil.

It is worth mentioning that the more essence oil is added, the denser your homemade repellent will be.

4 – Recipe for homemade repellent based on apple cider vinegar

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of apple cider vinegar;
  • 2 tablespoons of rosemary;
  • 2 tablespoons of sage;
  • 2 tablespoons of thyme;
  • 2 tablespoons of lavender;
  • 2 tablespoons of mint;
  • 1 glass jar that can be closed hermetically;
  • 1 bottle with spray cap.

How to make:

All herbs must be dry to be used in this recipe.

Mix the herbs and vinegar in the jar and seal tightly. You should leave the mixture unopened for about two to three weeks, always remembering to shake it once a day.

The next step is to strain the herbs and place the mixture in a bottle with a spray cap. Leave it in the fridge.

The application must be diluted in water, with the same portion of water for each portion of the repellent.

Tip – This repellent has a very strong smell when it is still wet, but when it dries this odor disappears.

5 – Electronic insect repellent recipe

Ingredients:

  • Electric device for fighting insects;
  • Orange skin.

How to make:

Replace the conventional tablet with a piece of orange peel.

Ingredients:

  • 200 grams of citronella;
  • 1 dark package;
  • 1 liter of 70% alcohol.

How to make:

Add the citronella leaves to ½ liter of 70% alcohol, in a dark, closed container. Let the packaging rest for 8 days in a dry, dark place.

Every day you should shake the mixture at least twice. After this time, strain the herbs and add another ½ liter of 70% alcohol.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack of 150 ml of Proderm (it is a moisturizer).

Apply to baby’s skin between 6 and 8 times a day to protect them from mosquitoes.
