Tendinitis in the arm: symptoms, causes and treatment

Tendinitis in the arm: symptoms, causes and treatment

Illnesses

Arm tendonitis is inflammation of the tendons present in the arm that can be caused by performing repetitive movements at work, practicing high-intensity and high-performance physical activity or be a consequence of natural wear and tear on the joints.

Thus, due to inflammation, some symptoms may be noticed, such as pain in the arm, greater sensitivity in the area, decreased strength and difficulty in making movements with the arm.

It is recommended that the orthopedist be consulted so that symptoms can be assessed, tendonitis confirmed and the most appropriate treatment initiated, which normally involves rest, use of anti-inflammatory ointments and applying compresses, for example.

Main symptoms

The main symptoms of arm tendonitis are:

  • Pain, especially when moving the arm;
  • Greater sensitivity on site;
  • Decrease in strength;
  • Difficulty performing movements with the affected arm, such as lifting or holding an object;
  • Decreased range of movement and flexibility.

Additionally, the person may experience swelling, redness and increased temperature in the area.

How the diagnosis is made

The diagnosis of tendonitis must be made by the orthopedist by evaluating the signs and symptoms presented by the person. In addition, the doctor may perform a physical exam, in which they make specific movements in the arm to assess whether the person feels pain, the level of pain, and the range of motion.

Make an appointment with your nearest orthopedist to investigate the possibility of arm tendonitis:

The orthopedist may also recommend imaging tests, such as ultrasound, MRI of the arm and/or X-ray to rule out other situations that cause similar symptoms and confirm tendonitis in the arm.

Causes of arm tendonitis

Arm tendonitis is mainly caused by repetitive movements, and is more common in people who practice high-performance, high-intensity sporting activities and who work by performing the same movement several times a day.

Furthermore, tendonitis in the arm can occur in older people, due to natural wear and tear on the joint, or be a consequence of joint diseases.

How the treatment is carried out

Treatment for tendonitis in the arm aims to reduce inflammation and thus alleviate symptoms. To do this, it is recommended that the person rest the affected arm, avoiding movements responsible for tendonitis. In addition, applying an ice pack and massaging the area can also help reduce inflammation and alleviate tendonitis symptoms.

The orthopedist may also recommend the application of anti-inflammatory ointments and/or analgesics. In some cases, physiotherapy sessions may also be recommended. See more details on the treatment for tendonitis.
