The conception of a futuristic city is closer to becoming reality. Last week, Saudi Arabia revealed the project for a vertical city that is being built over 170km long. According to the architects responsible for the project, “The Line”, the name given to the city, will cost R$5.3 trillion.
The vertical city will be made up of two parallel skyscrapers. The objective is for them to cross difficult-to-survive areas such as deserts and mountains and be separated by a gap just 200 meters wide.
Then, check out photos and videos of this and other vertical city projects that are being studied.
“The Line”

The project for the world’s first vertical city was announced by Saudi Arabia in 2021. However, since then, little has been said about the project. It was only in July 2022 that the first images and valuable information about the municipality were released.
It is estimated that “The Line” will accommodate 9 million inhabitants. Furthermore, environmental activists are happy with this construction, after all, the city will not emit carbon. In other words, there will not be a single motorized car circulating and all energy used on site will be 100% renewable.
This decision will help preserve up to 95% of the original land in the area.
The vertical city will be built in northwest Saudi Arabia, close to the Red Sea.

The vertical city facade

In the photo above, you can see that the entire facade of the vertical city is mirrored. However, this choice was not by chance or simply for aesthetics.
The objective is for “The Line” to be practically camouflaged in the middle of nature. As a result, it will not cause an environmental impact.

Height X Extension

If you thought the Empire Sate Buidingin New York, and the Eiffel Tower, in Paris, were tall buildings, you will certainly be surprised by the new vertical city in Saudi Arabia.
According to experts, the city under construction will be 500m above sea level, that is, much higher than the famous monuments. Of built area, there will be 34km².
Taking into account the number of inhabitants, the extent of the construction appears to be small. However, this was also thought by researchers.
The idea is that residents can do everything on foot. However, as there will be a 170km extension between the ends of the city, a high-speed train is also being planned. Therefore, in just 20 minutes, a person will be able to cross the city from one end to the other.
When will the vertical city be ready?

Building a true technological paradise is not easy. Initially, the project was expected to be ready in 2025. However, due to a series of delays, an optimistic view indicates that “The Line” will be ready in 2023.
Who designed The Line?

The American newspaper The Wall Street Journalannounced that the vertical city project is in the hands of Morphosis Architects.
Therefore, the person at the forefront is none other than Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne.
On the other hand, the visionary who is financing the project is the ruler and crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohameed bin Salman.
Other projects

“The Line” is just one of the projects designed by Mohammed and which is part of the Neom plan. In addition to the vertical city, the monarch is studying the construction of Oxagona space dedicated to high-tech factories.
Secondly, there is Triplea space focused on tourism with the first open-air ski slope in the Persian Gulf.
To build such spaces, it will be necessary to spend around R$2.7 trillion.
The Neom plan is part of Saudi Vision 2030, which is a project designed by the government to diversify the country’s economy. This way, they will not be dependent on the sale of oil.
After all, there will be Neom Tech & Digital Company it’s at Enowaa company focused on energy, hydrogen and water.
“’The Line’ will face challenges that humanity faces today in urban life and will shed light on ways and alternatives of living. We cannot ignore the livability and environmental crises facing our world’s cities, and Neom is at the forefront of providing new and imaginative solutions to solve these problems,” said the heir in an interview.
What do the critics say?

The project announced by Mohammed raised critical eyes not only for the construction of the vertical city, but also for political and economic issues on the subject.
If, on the one hand, experts question whether the project is viable in relation to the technology it requires, others point out “dystopian” aspects of the project.
According to critics, the idea is to create rivalry with the United Arab Emirates, which has large centers like Dubai. In this way, “The Line” would still be an important visiting location for tourists, making the local economy reach billions of dollars.
Furthermore, the strong human rights issues that permeate the country’s management can be a major obstacle when it comes to finding allies and investors.
